Delayed combination therapy of local brain hypothermia and decompressive craniectomy on acute stroke outcome in rat
Authors
Abstract:
Objective(s):Hypothermia and decompressive craniectomy (DC) have been shown to be neuroprotective. This study was designed to evaluate neuroprotective effects of delayed singular or combination of DC and local hypothermia on stroke. Materials and Methods: Cerebral ischemia was induced in 48 Wistar rats assigned to 4 groups: control, decompressive craniectomy (DC), local hypothermia (LH), combination of hypothermia and craniectomy (HC). Infarct size and BBB disruption were measured 48 hr after ischemia insult. Neurological deficits were assessed at 24 and 48 hr after stroke by using sticky tape test, hanging-wire test and Bederson’s scoring system. BBB disruption was measured by Evans blue dye leakage. Results: Although infarct size was significantly reduced in LH, DC and HC groups (P

Background and Aim: Decompressive craniectomy can be life-saving for patients with severe traumatic brain injury, but many questions about its ideal application, indications, timing, technique, and even the definition of success of decompressive craniectomy remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the factors associated with prognosis and outcome of patients with traumatic brain inj...

Background and purpose: Both hypothermia and Decompressive craniectomy (DC) have been shown to reduce ischemic injury in experimental middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). This study was designed to evaluate the effect of delayed combination of DC and Local Hypothermia (LH) on infarct size, neurological outcome and blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption in a rat model of stroke. Material a...

the patient with head trauma is a challenge for the emergency physician and for the neurosurgeon. currently traumatic brain injury constitutes a public health problem. knowledge of the various supportive therapeutic strategies in the pre-hospital and pre-operative stages is essential for optimal care. the immediate rapid infusion of large volumes of crystalloids to restore blood volume and bloo...
full textDelayed and Prolonged Local Brain Hypothermia Combined with Decompressive Craniectomy: A Novel Therapeutic Strategy That Modulates Glial Dynamics
Hypothermia is considered a useful intervention for limiting pathophysiological changes after brain injury. Local hypothermia is a relatively safe and convenient intervention that circumvents many of the complications associated with systemic hypothermia. However, successful hypothermia treatment requires careful consideration of several factors including its practicality, feasibility, and asso...
